Abstract

This article examines the concept of fasād in QS al-Rūm (30):38–45 through a dialogical approach between classical–contemporary Qur’anic exegesis and modern social theories. By prioritizing the authoritative interpretations of classical and modern mufassirs, this study establishes the linguistic and socio-moral meaning of fasād before engaging Ulrich Beck’s Risk Society theory and Hans Jonas’ Ethics of Responsibility. The findings demonstrate that fasād is not merely an individual moral failure but a systemic social phenomenon comparable to manufactured risks in modern society. Furthermore, the ethical imperative embedded in the Qur’anic discourse resonates strongly with Jonas’ future-oriented responsibility. This integrative approach offers a novel reconstruction of Qur’anic ethics, positioning fasād as a key concept for addressing contemporary ecological and social crises without undermining the integrity of traditional tafsir.
