Abstract

This study focuses on the thought of Muhammad Syuhudi Ismail regarding hadith maudhu' (fabricated hadith). The main problem addressed is how Muhammad Syuhudi Ismail identifies hadith maudhu', his methodology and criteria, and his perspectives on the social impacts of Hadis Maudhu’ within society. This research aims to analyze in depth the identification criteria used by Ismail, evaluate his contributions, and assess the strengths and limitations of his work in hadith criticism. The research employs a qualitative library research method with a critical-analytical and hermeneutical approach to Ismail's works, particularly his book Hadis Nabi Menurut Pembela, Pengingkar, dan Pemalsunya. The findings reveal that Syuhudi Ismail applies a systematic methodology by categorizing the traits of hadith maudhu' through two main dimensions: the narrator (rawi) and the text (matn). From the aspect of narrators, key indicators include direct confessions of fabrication and historical inconsistencies. Textually, Hadis Maudhu’ exhibit linguistic anomaly, logical contradiction, or opposition to clear Qur'anic principles and mutawatir traditions. Ismail highlights that although some fabricated traditions contain morally good values, their negative socio-religious impact far outweighs any perceived benefit, as they distort the perfection of Islamic teachings. This study contributes to the development of contemporary hadith criticism, especially in contextualizing hadith scholarship within Indonesian society.
