Tahqīq Turāṯ and Scholarly Authority in the Islamic Intellectual Tradition

Abstract
Tahqīq Turāṯ has traditionally been regarded primarily as a method of editing Islamic manuscripts to produce authentic and academically reliable texts. However, this perspective has not fully explained its role as an integral mechanism for establishing and maintaining scholarly authority within the Islamic intellectual tradition. This article aims to analyze the role of Tahqīq Turāṯ in constructing scholarly authority through the processes of verification, validation, and transmission of the Islamic intellectual heritage. This study employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. Data were collected from classical and contemporary literature on Tahqīq Turāṯ, the history of knowledge transmission, Islamic manuscripts, as well as studies on Islamic epistemology and scholarly authority. The data were analyzed using a descriptive-analytical approach to examine the relationship between the practice of tahqīq, textual authenticity, and the legitimacy of knowledge within the Islamic scholarly tradition. The findings demonstrate that Tahqīq Turāṯ is not merely a technical procedure for editing manuscripts but also an epistemological instrument that preserves textual authenticity, verifies the validity of the intellectual tradition, and strengthens the credibility of turāṯ works as authoritative academic references. Through the critical examination of textual variants, source identification, reconstruction of intellectual chains of transmission, and the preparation of scholarly critical apparatus, Tahqīq Turāṯ contributes to the continuity of the Islamic intellectual tradition while reinforcing the academic legitimacy of classical Islamic works. The novelty of this study lies in repositioning Tahqīq Turāṯ not merely as a method of textual editing but as an epistemological mechanism that plays a fundamental role in the construction and preservation of scholarly authority within the Islamic intellectual tradition. This study is expected to broaden the discourse on Tahqīq Turāṯ and provide a conceptual foundation for the further development of Islamic manuscript studies in the contemporary era.
