Abstract

Writing skills are essential competencies for fostering literacy culture and critical thinking among Islamic boarding school students (santri). However, writing instruction in pesantren often remains centered on conventional academic tasks and rarely addresses contextual issues. This community service activity aimed to enhance the writing skills of santri at Sabilil Muttaqien Islamic Boarding School, Pangandaran Regency, through the implementation of Ecotheology-Oriented Project-Based Learning (PjBL). The method utilized Participatory Action Research (PAR), encompassing five stages: to know, to understand, to plan, to act, and to change. The program involved 50 junior and senior high school santri divided into 10 groups. The integration of PjBL was combined with Tompkins’ writing process stages, which include prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. The results showed that the application of PjBL and the writing process approach effectively increased active participation, collaboration, and writing skills among participants. The main outcome was 10 popular scientific articles covering environmental damage, faith-based cleanliness, the ecological role of santri, and pesantren environmental health. Beyond refining literacy competencies, integrating the ecotheology theme successfully cultivated ecological awareness and moral-spiritual responsibility among santri to preserve the environment based on Islamic values.
