Indigenous Perspectives on Education Management: The Role of Baduy’s Women in the Modern Era

Abstract

This study investigates how the Baduy community, particularly its women, perceives and engages with education while intentionally rejecting formal schooling and modernization. Employing a qualitative ethnographic approach, the research provides an in-depth understanding of the community's distinct cultural practices and educational narratives. The findings reveal that education among Baduy women is viewed as supportive rather than essential. While traditional customs strictly prohibit children from attending formal schools, they do not forbid learning itself. Consequently, many Baduy women successfully acquire basic literacy and numeracy skills through informal interactions with outsiders, supplementing the rich oral knowledge passed down through generations. Furthermore, the study identifies a notable shift in socio-economic perspectives within the community. While Baduy women have traditionally been restricted to domestic and agricultural roles, an increasing number of women in the Outer Baduy community are now actively engaging in trading activities. Ultimately, this research highlights the community's ability to balance cultural preservation with informal adaptation, redefining education outside the boundaries of conventional schooling.
