Mediatization of Religion. Abstract

The global ecological crisis not only poses technical and ecological problems, but also gives rise to competing narratives of civilization in the digital space, when Islam is often positioned as part of the problem, not as the source of the solution. This research is an in-depth single case study of the strategy of framing the Islamic ecology of the archipelago in the official video of the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia “Ekoteologi: Merawat Bumi, Menjaga Iman” (@kemenag_ri, TikTok, 2025). Using Robert Entman's (1993) framing model, this study analyzes how the elements of Define Problems, Diagnose Causes, Make Moral Judgments, and Treatment Recommendations are realized through textual, narrative, and visual dimensions simultaneously. The results of the study show that the video frames the environmental crisis as a spiritual crisis marked by the fading of human manners towards nature. Anthropocentrism and secular materialism are positioned as the main causes of ecological degradation, while the concepts of Tawhid, Khalifah, and Amanah are affirmed as the cornerstones of transcendent environmental ethics. Nusantara Islamic ecotheological practices, such as green pesantren and community-based conservation, are offered as authentic and inclusive solutions. This framing functions as a form of ecotheology apologetics as well as an instrument of cultural resilience that marks a shift from defensive resilience to assertive resilience in the contestation of global environmental discourse in the multipolar era. The novelty of the research lies in the integration of Entman's framing model with the perspective of apologetics of ecotheology and the mediatization of religion in the context of Islam in the Nusantara.
