Abstract

Environmental degradation and ecological crises have become pressing global concerns that demand integrated educational responses. Islamic educational institutions possess a rich theological tradition grounded in the concepts of Tawhid, Khalifah, Amanah, and Mizan that can serve as a foundational framework for environmentally oriented education. However, existing literature tends to treat Islamic environmental ethics and green school programmes as parallel rather than integrated phenomena. This conceptual paper proposes an integrated framework that positions Islamic Ecotheology as the philosophical foundation for Islamic Educational Management (POACE) and operationalises it through a Green School framework to foster Environmental Character Formation among students. The proposed framework argues that Tawhid establishes the cosmological basis for ecological responsibility, Khalifah defines the managerial role of human beings as stewards of creation, Amanah provides the ethical imperative for institutional accountability, and Mizan supplies the principle of ecological balance as an educational goal. When channelled through the POACE management functions— Planning, Organizing, Actuating, Controlling, and Evaluating—these theological foundations systematically produce green school dimensions encompassing environmental curriculum, school culture, environmental management, stakeholder participation, and sustainability practices. The cumulative outcome is the formation of students who demonstrate Environmental Awareness, Environmental Responsibility, Ecological Ethics, and Pro- environmental Behaviour as expressions of an Islami character oriented toward the environment. This paper contributes a novel conceptual chain—Islamic Ecotheology → Islamic Educational Management → Green School → Environmental Character Formation—that bridges ecotheological scholarship with practical Islamic school management.
