Abstract

The global environmental crisis in the multipolar era drives the educational sphere to integrate sustainability perspectives across disciplines, including language pedagogy and assessment. However, Arabic Reading Comprehension (Fahm al-Maqrū’) materials in various Arabic proficiency tests remain predominantly centered on Middle Eastern universal themes, offering limited representation of ecological values rooted in local cultures and the diverse perspectives of the Islamic world. The Malay Muslim community possesses a rich ecotheological heritage that harmonizes Islamic teachings with indigenous wisdom in preserving the environment. This study aimed to construct a conceptual framework for integrating Malay-Islamic ecotheological values into Arabic Reading Comprehension texts as an alternative approach to enriching Arabic proficiency test materials. The study employed a qualitative approach using library research and content analysis to examine literature on Arabic language assessment, Islamic ecotheology, Malay culture, and sustainable education. The findings demonstrated that the theological principles of Tawḥīd, Khalīfah, Amānah, Mīzān, and Iṣlāḥ could be integrated into Arabic reading texts through narratives derived from Malay local wisdom, including the traditions of Lubuk Larangan, the preservation of Sialang trees, and the management of Hutan Larangan. These values were subsequently reconstructed into standard Arabic (fuṣḥā) reading texts while maintaining the linguistic characteristics required for reading proficiency assessment. To illustrate the proposed framework, the study presented a sample of an Arabic Reading Comprehension text incorporating these ecotheological values without compromising the primary function of the assessment as a measure of language proficiency. Conceptually, this study offers a new perspective on the development of Arabic assessment materials by integrating ecological ethics, Islamic values, and Malay local wisdom into reading comprehension texts. The proposed framework contributes to the development of more culturally responsive, contextually relevant, and value-oriented Arabic proficiency assessments.
