Abstract

This study aims to construct a framework for Arabic reading comprehension proficiency testing by positioning Islamic discourse as the authentic reading domain in reading assessments at Indonesian universities. This research is motivated by the tendency of reading comprehension assessments in universities to focus on achievement tests and grammar mastery, thus not fully representing reading proficiency. This study employed a qualitative approach with a didactic transposition framework. Scholarly knowledge sourced was synthesized and transformed into an operational construct of reading proficiency. The study also analyzed curriculum documents and reading comprehension practices in Arabic Language Education and Arabic Literature study programs at Indonesian universities to contextualize the construct. The results of this study indicate that Islamic discourse can be positioned as an authentic sociocultural domain in the assessment of reading proficiency without transforming the test into a measure of religiosity. The resulting construct emphasizes multidimensional reading skills encompassing global understanding, inference, discourse analysis, critical evaluation, and sociocultural interpretation. This research contributes to the development of standardized Arabic language proficiency tests that are rooted in local contexts yet maintain global comparability. The research's novelty lies in the integration of Islamic discourse into reading proficiency assessments through a didactic transposition approach, thus bridging the global proficiency framework with the reality of Arabic literacy in Indonesia.
