Abstract

Environmental degradation has increasingly been recognized as not only an ecological crisis but also a moral and religious challenge, prompting growing scholarly interest in Islamic eco-theology. While previous studies have predominantly emphasized Qur'anic perspectives on environmental ethics, limited attention has been given to how Prophetic traditions (hadith) are internalized and transformed into ecological consciousness within Islamic educational institutions. This study aims to examine the process through which environmental hadith are interpreted, internalized, and implemented in shaping ecological consciousness among students at Pesantren Cipansor, Indonesia, through the perspective of Living Hadith. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews with kyai, teachers, and junior secondary students, and documentary analysis. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of value transformation within the pesantren environment. The findings reveal that ecological consciousness is developed through a continuous process involving religious interpretation, educational internalization, institutional culture, and collective ecological practices. Based on these findings, this study proposes the Prophetic Ecological Consciousness Model (PECM), which explains the transformation of Prophetic traditions into sustainable environmental behavior through six interconnected stages. The study contributes to the advancement of Living Hadith by extending its analytical scope beyond ritual practices to environmental ethics and offers a conceptual framework for integrating Islamic education, eco-theology, and sustainability within contemporary pesantren.
